Microgreens vs Sprouts
Many people confuse Microgreens with sprouts - it is a common misconception!
But in fact, they are very different. Some key differences are:
- Migrogreenss are grown in soil, on a grow mat, or hydroponically while sprouts are soaked in water and rinsed a few times each day.
- Microgreens seeds are planted in soil and harvested typically 10-14 days after planting. Sprouts are soaked and rinsed for a few days then ready to consume.
- Some research suggests Microgreens are more nutrient dense than sprouts.
- Microgreens have a much LOWER risk of food borne illness (such as salmonella) than sprouts because Microgreens are grown in soil with well controlled ventilation.
How long do they last?
Microgreens can typically last up to 2 weeks in your fridge.
Some things that will help extend the life of your greens are:
- Keeping your fridge between 3-4 degrees.
- Making sure they stay dry before you eat them.
- Keeping them in an airtight container in your fridge.
- Limiting the amount of time the container is open and out of the fridge.
